The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has opened nominations for the 2026 World Teachers’ Day Awards, seeking to recognise teachers and education administrators who have made exceptional contributions to teaching and learning across Kenya.
The awards will be presented during World Teachers’ Day celebrations on October 5, 2026, under the theme
“Twawaenzi Walimu – Mashujaa Wetu”, meaning “Let us honour teachers – our heroes.”
TSC said the initiative seeks to reward teachers whose work demonstrates dedication, innovation, leadership, inclusivity, resilience, and measurable impact beyond their routine responsibilities.
The nomination deadline is August 26, 2026, at 11 pm, giving eligible teachers and institutions limited time to submit their entries.
Teachers Eligible for the 2026 Awards
The nomination exercise is open to current registered and retired teachers who have made demonstrable contributions to education.
Nominees may come from recognised public, private and international institutions across Kenya, including primary schools, junior schools, secondary and senior schools and teacher training colleges.
TSC requires nominees to have been directly responsible for the achievement, initiative, innovation or leadership contribution highlighted in their nomination.
They must also provide verifiable evidence demonstrating that their contribution went beyond routine duties and produced a measurable impact.
Such evidence may include institutional records, learner outcomes, testimonials, awards, reports, certificates, photographs and publications.
A teacher can be considered in a maximum of two of the 13 award categories, provided they meet the specific requirements for each category.
Teachers, colleagues, or heads of institutions can submit nominations. Retired teachers are required to be nominated through the subcounty where they last served.
13 Award Categories Announced
The 2026 awards cover 13 categories, targeting different areas of excellence within the teaching profession.
They include the Lifetime Achievement Award, Early Years Educator Award, Sustainable Development Educator Award, Early Career Educator Award and School Leadership Excellence Award.
The remaining categories are the Inclusive Educator Award, Child Protection Champion Award, Co-curricular and Talent Development Award, Teacher Mentor Award, Innovation and ICT Integration in Teaching Award, Most Resilient Teacher Award, National Honours Award and International Recognition Award.
The categories recognise achievements ranging from classroom teaching and school leadership to child protection, talent development, technology, mentorship and support for vulnerable learners.
Teachers Must Demonstrate Measurable Impact
TSC has emphasised that nominees must show evidence of tangible results rather than simply demonstrate good performance in their normal duties.
The assessment will consider the relevance of a contribution to teaching and learning, its measurable impact, innovation, inclusivity and responsiveness to learner needs.
Judges will also examine professional or institutional impact, sustainability, potential for wider adoption and the credibility of supporting evidence.
The commission will further assess whether the contribution aligns with national education priorities and professional standards.
For the Innovation and ICT Integration in Teaching category, eligible contributions must have been demonstrated from 2025.
Several other categories, including Sustainable Development Educator, School Leadership Excellence and Inclusive Educator, will assess contributions made from 2023.
Lifetime Achievement Award Targets Veteran Teachers
The Lifetime Achievement Award is designed to recognise teachers who have dedicated significant portions of their careers to education.
Applicants for the category must have at least 20 years of teaching experience.
The framework also creates room for younger teachers through the Early Career Educator Award, which targets educators with five years or less of teaching experience by the nomination deadline.
This allows TSC to recognise both veteran teachers with decades of service and younger educators who have already demonstrated exceptional impact.
Other categories focus on specific achievements, including sustainability, inclusion, technology, mentorship, resilience and talent development.
Selection Process to Take Place in Four Stages
The selection process will begin immediately after the nomination deadline.
The first stage will involve an eligibility check running from August 27 to 29.
Subcounty selection will then take place from August 30 to September 3, followed by county selection from September 4 to 8.
Regional selection is scheduled for September 9 and 10, with the final national recognition list expected on September 11.
Subcounty and county panels will identify the strongest nominees in each category, while regional panels will select their top candidates for consideration at the national level.
The best three nominees in each category at the final stage will be submitted for recognition during the World Teachers’ Day celebrations.
More Than 16,000 Selection Slots Provided
The awards framework provides for 13,728 selection slots at subcounty level, 1,551 at county level, 495 at regional level and 297 at national level.
This gives a combined total of 16,071 progressive selection slots.
However, TSC clarified that the figure does not represent 16,071 separate award winners because nominees progress through the various levels of selection.
Teachers recognised under the National Honours and International Recognition categories will also receive separate recognition based on the requirements of those categories.
TSC Seeks to Highlight Exceptional Teachers
The awards come as Kenya's teaching workforce continues to serve a large and diverse learner population across early childhood, primary, junior school, senior school and teacher training institutions.
The teaching service has grown significantly over the decades, from about 37,000 teachers in 1967 to more than one million.
As of June 2026, approximately 415,000 teachers were directly employed by TSC.
Through the awards, the commission hopes to identify successful practices that can be replicated across learning institutions.
TSC said the initiative is intended not only to reward outstanding teachers but also to document measurable contributions and encourage other educators to adopt effective approaches.
Nomination Deadline Set for August 26
Teachers and institutions seeking to participate must complete their nominations by 11 pm on August 26, 2026.
Applicants are expected to provide accurate information and sufficient supporting evidence to demonstrate the impact of the nominee's contribution.
With eligibility checks scheduled to begin immediately after the deadline, nominees have been urged to submit their applications before the closing time.
The 2026 World Teachers’ Day Awards will ultimately place exceptional educators in the spotlight while celebrating their contribution to Kenya's education system.
