TSC JSS Teacher Jobs 2026 Requirements for KCSE Grades, Degrees and Teaching Subjects

The Teachers Service Commission is preparing to recruit 20,000 teachers for Junior Secondary Schools, creating thousands of opportunities for qualified graduates, diploma holders and technical teachers seeking employment in the public education system. However, meeting the basic academic qualification does not automatically guarantee eligibility. 

TSC has set specific KCSE grades, degree and diploma requirements, teaching subject combinations, course unit thresholds, and professional training conditions that applicants must satisfy before they can be considered. 

Some university degrees also remain ineligible because their subjects are not incorporated into the current secondary school curriculum.

TSC JSS Teacher Recruitment 2026 Requirements Applicants Must Meet

The requirements for the 20,000 Junior Secondary School positions differ depending on whether an applicant is applying as a graduate teacher, diploma teacher or technical teacher.

Applicants should carefully match their academic qualifications with the requirements for their preferred category because additional qualifications cannot always correct an unsuitable undergraduate or diploma course.

Graduate Teachers Must Meet C+ Subject Requirements

Applicants seeking graduate teaching positions must generally have a minimum KCSE mean grade of C+, with at least C+ in each of the two teaching subjects.

Those who followed the A Level system can qualify with two Principal passes and one Subsidiary pass.

Eligible degree qualifications include:

Diploma holders who subsequently completed a Bachelor of Education can also qualify where they had a minimum KCSE mean grade of C Plain and at least C+ in their two teaching subjects before undertaking the degree.

TSC also recognises certain A Level pathways where applicants had the required Diploma in Education and relevant Principal and Subsidiary passes before pursuing a Bachelor of Education.

Bridging and pre university certificates may also be recognised where the programme was completed before December 31, 2015.

Diploma Teachers Face Additional Subject Requirements

Applicants for diploma teacher positions generally require a minimum KCSE mean grade of C+, together with at least C+ in each of the two teaching subjects.

They must also possess a Diploma in Education from a recognised teacher training institution.

Additional minimum grades apply to English and Mathematics.

• English requires at least C- at KCSE.
• Mathematics for science based courses requires at least C.
• Mathematics for non science courses requires at least D+.

There are exceptions for certain applicants who graduated in 2008 or earlier with a mean grade of C Plain and C Plain in the two teaching subjects.

Hearing and visually impaired applicants who enrolled for training with the same grades may also qualify under special provisions, with lower Mathematics thresholds applicable depending on the course category.

Technical Teachers Require Relevant Technical Training

Technical teacher applicants must generally have a minimum KCSE mean grade of C+ and at least C+ in their two teaching subjects, or the specified A Level equivalent.

They must possess one of the following qualifications:

• Bachelor of Education Technology
• Bachelor of Science in a relevant technical subject
• Higher Diploma in a technical course
• Diploma in a technical course

Applicants must also have attained at least C Plain in Mathematics and English at KCSE.

Those applying with a Bachelor of Science, Higher Diploma or Diploma in a technical course must additionally possess a Diploma in Technical Teacher Education from the Kenya School of TVET, formerly known as Kenya Technical Training College.

TSC Sets Strict Rules on Teaching Subjects and University Degrees

TSC has also established detailed requirements governing the subjects applicants studied at secondary school and university, meaning possessing a teaching qualification alone may not be enough to secure eligibility.

Technical Subjects Have Specific KCSE Requirements

Different technical teaching areas require applicants to have attained the prescribed grades in relevant KCSE subjects.

A minimum grade of C+ in one of the prescribed alternative subjects may be sufficient for the relevant CBE technical subject.

Some University Degrees Do Not Qualify for JSS Teaching

TSC has specifically excluded qualifications whose subjects are not incorporated into the current secondary school curriculum.

Among the degrees listed as non qualifying are:

• Natural Resources
• Horticulture
• Fisheries
• Meteorology
• Farm Machinery
• Anthropology
• Forestry
• Sociology
• Biotechnology
• Animal Husbandry
• Journalism
• Theology or Divinity
• Biochemistry

Applicants holding such qualifications cannot automatically become eligible by obtaining a PGDE or taking additional enhancement courses where their original degree does not provide subjects taught within the current secondary school curriculum.

Certain Degrees Can Lead to Specific Teaching Subjects

Some qualifications can qualify applicants for particular teaching areas where they satisfy the required conditions.

Applicants trained in Economics, Commerce or Accounting can apply to teach Business Studies.

Those trained in Social Education and Ethics can apply to teach CRE or IRE.

Applicants with Drawing and Design or Art and Design qualifications can qualify for Fine Art.

Those trained in Physical Education, Sports and Recreation require Biology as the specified alternative subject.

Applicants trained in Theatre and Film must have at least C+ in any language.

TSC Requires Course Units, Teaching Practice and Special Needs Qualifications

Beyond KCSE grades and academic qualifications, applicants must demonstrate that they completed the required university or diploma course content in their designated teaching subjects.

Graduate Teachers Must Have Eight Units in Each Subject

TSC requires graduate teachers to have completed at least eight course units in each of their two teaching subjects.

They must also have studied teaching methods in both subjects and completed at least three months of teaching practice.

Enhancement of teaching units may only be considered where the applicant failed to attain the required number of units during their original degree or diploma programme.

Applicants presenting a third teaching subject must demonstrate that they completed all required units offered in that subject over the prescribed four year period, including teaching methods and teaching practice.

They must also provide evidence confirming that they achieved the required credit hours.

Agriculture, Business and Computer Studies Have Special Rules

Applicants generally need to have studied their two designated teaching subjects at KCSE, although TSC provides exceptions for Agriculture, Business Studies, Home Science and Computer Studies.

Where an applicant did not study Business Studies or Computer Studies at KCSE, they must have attained at least C+ in Mathematics.

Applicants who did not study Agriculture or Home Science must have achieved at least C+ in Biology.

Special Needs Education Opens Additional Teaching Pathways

TSC also recognises Kenya Sign Language and Braille as instructional subjects within Special Needs Education.

Eligible combinations can include subjects such as Biology and KSL or Geography and Braille.

Applicants trained in new CBE learning areas can also qualify where they meet the applicable requirements.

These areas include:

• Integrated Science
• Pre-Technical Studies
• Creative Arts
• Sports
• Social Studies

The 20,000 JSS teaching positions therefore present a significant opportunity for qualified Kenyan teachers, but applicants will need to scrutinise their KCSE grades, academic qualifications, teaching subjects, course units, and professional training before applying. 

Meeting one requirement while falling short on another could determine whether an application is considered eligible for recruitment.
