Kakamega County is home to several C1 senior schools, the highest category of public senior secondary schools under Kenya's Competency-Based Education (CBE) system. 


These institutions are recognised for academic excellence, quality infrastructure, and their ability to deliver diverse senior school pathways.


Many C1 senior schools were previously classified as National Schools, while others attained C1 status under the Ministry of Education's current classification framework.


The county also has Special Needs Education (SNE) institutions within the C1 category that provide specialised learning support for students with disabilities.
