The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has rolled out a new digital platform allowing Kenyans to access, download and verify their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificates online, marking a major shift from the traditional paper-based system.
In guidelines issued on Tuesday, July 21, KNEC outlined the step-by-step process applicants should follow to generate their digital certificates, which will be available for a processing fee of Ksh1,500.
The initiative is expected to simplify access to academic credentials while making it easier for employers, universities and other institutions to verify certificates electronically.
How Applicants Can Download Their Digital KCSE Certificate
According to KNEC, applicants should begin by visiting the e-Certificate portal and creating an account under the Applicant (Student/Alumni) category.
During registration, users will be required to provide a valid email address, after which the system will send a One-Time Password (OTP) valid for 10 minutes to verify the account.
Those who already have accounts can simply log in using their registered email address and request a fresh OTP to access the dashboard.
Once logged in, applicants must complete their profile by providing personal details, including:
- Citizenship
- Full names
- Date of birth
- Phone number
- National ID number where applicable
To generate the certificate, users should then select the Generate e-Certificate option and provide their KCSE examination details, including:
- KCSE index number
- Examination type
- Year of examination
The platform currently supports KCSE certificates issued between 1989 and 2025.
After the information is verified, applicants will be prompted to pay a Ksh1,500 processing fee through the supported mobile payment platform.
Once payment has been successfully confirmed, the digital certificate becomes available for download in PDF format.
New Platform Also Enables Certificate Verification
Beyond downloading certificates, the new portal also introduces an online verification feature designed to simplify authentication of academic credentials.
Certificate holders can generate verification reports and securely share them with employers, universities or other organizations by entering the recipient's details and selecting their preferred delivery method, including email.
The digital verification system is expected to reduce cases of forged academic certificates while speeding up recruitment, admissions and other processes that require proof of academic qualifications.
The rollout represents one of KNEC's biggest digital reforms in recent years as the examination body continues to modernise its services and reduce reliance on physical documentation.
The new platform is also expected to save applicants time and costs associated with replacing or presenting physical certificates while improving the efficiency of academic credential verification across Kenya.
