The university’s latest push was highlighted during a strategic engagement between Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nathan Oyori Ogechi and Prof. Solomon Nyaanga of William Paterson University in the United States.
The two explored opportunities for joint research and publications, postgraduate co-supervision, public lectures, academic exchanges and professional networking.
The partnership is expected to give Kisii University students and faculty greater access to international research networks while creating opportunities for U.S. scholars to engage with Kenyan research priorities and African perspectives.
A planned donation of Business Management books from William Paterson University is among the immediate outcomes of the engagement.
Kisii University Deepens Ethical AI Partnership
The Kenya-U.S. engagement comes as universities grapple with the rapid growth of artificial intelligence across education, healthcare, agriculture, business and public administration.
Kisii University has already established a partnership with the Mozilla Foundation focused on responsible and ethical artificial intelligence education.
Through its Ethical Artificial Intelligence Project, the university integrated ethics into computing education while involving industry experts in teaching students about responsible technology use.
The partnership later expanded into the Mozilla Responsible Computing Challenge, which seeks to embed responsible computing principles into academic curricula and professional practice.
The programme addresses emerging concerns including data privacy, cybersecurity and algorithmic bias.
University records show that Kisii University previously received a US$25,000 grant from Mozilla to support the integration of ethical artificial intelligence into its undergraduate Computer Science curriculum.
CHAKAMA Conference Highlights Future of Kiswahili
Kisii University also hosted the CHAKAMA regional conference, bringing together scholars, researchers, teachers and language experts from Kenya and Tanzania.
The conference focused on the future of Kiswahili research and education amid rapid technological development and the growing influence of artificial intelligence.
Dr. Riro Matinde said discussions centred on ensuring Kiswahili remains relevant in education, research and technology as AI systems increasingly rely on large language datasets.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migosi Ogamba also opened a related forum, highlighting the importance of research and innovation in strengthening Kenya’s education sector.
University Builds Wider Global Research Network
Kisii University’s partnership with William Paterson University adds to its existing network of international academic collaborations.
The institution has maintained a long-standing partnership with the University of Minnesota covering research, staff and student development, as well as community programmes.
In 2024, the University of Minnesota committed more than US$660,000 over three years to support research at Kisii University.
The two institutions have also collaborated on rural leadership research and training in southwestern Kenya.
Kisii University’s wider internationalisation strategy includes partnerships with institutions across Africa and other parts of the world.
The university says such collaborations are critical to expanding research opportunities, improving academic programmes and exposing students and faculty to global knowledge and expertise.
